Illustrious

Communities, customers, and the organisations that serve them

Small business websites are the start, not the point

We build small business websites and look after them. What matters more is everything the site opens onto — a portal your customers reach without an account, the tools to run the work they bring, and the infrastructure to grow a community around it.

Illustrious exists to make an organisation easier to reach and easier to run — and to help the people in it get better at running it. We start with small business websites, because that is how most people find you, but the site is the doorway rather than the building. Website management here means what sits behind it: the portal your customers use without another password to remember, and the tools that turn an enquiry into work and work into an invoice that gets paid. We run the platform for our own clients as well as yours, and what we learn doing that work goes back into it rather than staying with us.

What we do today

Sites

A hosted website on your own domain, with certificates and DNS handled for you. Content is structured rather than free-form, so the pages stay consistent as they grow.

Your own domain

HTTPS handled automatically

Edit content without touching code

Enquiries

Contact forms on your site land in a dashboard and in your inbox, so nothing sits unread in a form service you forgot you signed up for.

Spam filtering built in

Email notifications

A record of every enquiry

A portal your customers can actually use

Your customer opens a link you send and they are in — no account to create, no password to forget. They see their invoices and what is booked in, described in your organisation's words rather than ours.

A sign-in link, not another password

Their invoices, and what is scheduled

Your vocabulary, not our jargon

Customers and the work you book

An enquiry becomes a customer in one step, and the work you schedule against them hangs off that record rather than your memory.

Turn an enquiry into a customer

Assign work to a colleague

History in one place

Invoices and payment

Send an invoice, take card payment online, and see what you actually earned rather than what you hoped to.

Card payment through your own Stripe account

Customers pay from the portal

Revenue by service and by period

Search visibility

Connect Google Search Console and see what your pages actually rank for — alongside the terms you meant them to rank for, and specific guidance on the gap.

Search Console reporting in your dashboard

Per-page target keywords

On-page guidance, not a score

What we are building next

Two things are being built now. Neither is available yet, and we would rather say so than let a roadmap read like a feature list. Community infrastructure. The same spine that runs an organisation — who belongs, what they can do, and somewhere for them to meet — pointed at communities rather than customer lists. It is the reason the platform is built the way it is, and it is where this is going. A site builder that drafts for you. Describe what the organisation does and get a first site back, assembled from Illustrious-approved components and then yours to edit. Approved is the important word: the parts are ones we maintain, so a generated page stays consistent, accessible and fast instead of whatever a model felt like emitting that day.

How we talk about search

Nobody can promise you a position in Google's results, and anyone who does is either guessing or lying. What can be done is concrete: make sure each page clearly reflects the thing it is about, that the site is technically sound, and that you can see what people actually searched for when they found you. That is what our tools measure and report. Where something is a judgement call rather than a rule, we say so.

How we work

No rank promises

We report what happened, not what we hope will.

Your accounts stay yours

Google access is read-and-manage for Search Console only, and you can revoke it at any time.

Your customers pay you directly

Card payments settle into your organisation's own Stripe account. We connect it; the money does not pass through us.

Nothing is held hostage

Downgrading deletes nothing, and you can ask for a copy of your content at any time.

Built in the open

The platform is developed continuously; you can see what changed and when.

We learn in public

We run this platform for our own clients too. What the work teaches us goes back into the product.
